Embracing Self-Care Practices

In the hustle and bustle of modern life, prioritising and taking care of our mental health is both challenging and important. We are constantly reminded to care for our physical health: GP check-ups and dental reminder letters arrive in the mail, tv and social media advertising remind us of how to care for our bodies, bowel screening kits come to us at home, campaigns roll out for programs and initiatives to help us to quit-smoking, protect ourselves from the sun, walk more and so on; but the reminders to care for our mental health can be few and far between. Dedicating some time, energy, and thought to how we can care for our mental health, as well as our physical health, is the key to overall wellbeing.

Here, we explore some effective ways to prioritise self-care, nurturing a healthier mind in the process.

1. Mindful Moments:

Incorporating mindfulness into your routine can do wonders for your mental health. Look for those ‘easy’ opportunities to be present and engaged, like watching the sunset, sunrise, walk in the garden etc, but also try to get mindful and engaged in everyday tasks and activities. For example, being present in your morning shower can turn it from a rushed activity that is done on ‘autopilot’ into a nourishing activity and an act of self-care. Perhaps in your shower, you can notice the feeling of the warm water on your skin, the way the steam gathers above you, the sounds of the water as it falls on the tiles, and the smell of the body wash as you clean your body; now your shower has become a source of nourishment and enjoyment, simply through the shift in our focus of attention. These chances to be mindful open a window to joy and reduce rumination which can increase our overall sense of happiness.

2. Engage in Physical Activity:

Regular exercise isn’t just beneficial for your physical health; it’s a powerful tool for mental health too. Whether it’s some slow and gentle stretches in your lounge room, an online yoga video, a leisurely stroll in the park, or a session at the gym, physical activity releases endorphins that boost your mood and reduce stress. Aim for activities you enjoy, making exercise an enjoyable part of your self-care routine.

3. Nurture Social Connections:

Human connections are fundamental for mental health. Spend time with loved ones who help you to feel good, engage in connected conversations, and build a support network that uplifts and encourages you. Sharing your thoughts and feelings with trusted individuals can alleviate stress, loneliness, and foster a sense of belonging and security. If you feel disconnected or are somewhere new, why don’t you head out into the community, order a coffee at the local shop, visit the library, and get chatting with the people in your community.

4. Indulge in Enjoyable Activities, eg- Creative Outlets:

Engaging in creative activities can provide an outlet for self-expression and relaxation. Whether it’s painting, writing, playing a musical instrument, or crafting, creative endeavors stimulate your mind and offer a great way to be mindfully engaged in something. Why don’t you try something new?

5. Prioritise Restful Sleep:

Quality sleep is one of the key functions for good mental health. Create a sleep-conducive environment and establish a consistent sleep schedule. Ensure you’re getting the recommended hours of sleep to allow your mind and body to rejuvenate, enhancing your overall mood and cognitive function. If you are struggling with sleep, your psychologist can provide you with lots of information with regard to bettering sleep.

By incorporating mindfulness, physical activity, connection to healthy and helpful social connections, engaging in enjoyable activities such as engaging in something creative, and making sure you work on good amounts of restful sleep in your routine, you can foster resilience and be in a better position to manage life’s stressors.

Remember, self-care isn’t a luxury; it’s a fundamental practice that supports your mental health journey. Incorporating these practices into your daily routine can make a significant difference in your emotional well-being. Take the time to care for yourself and you will be in the best place to flourish!
