Frequently Asked Questions

How much does it cost to see a Psychologist?

  • For standard appointments, a fee of $230 per session applies (Medicare and Private health rebates available as per below).
    • If you have a valid Mental Health Care plan from your GP, $137.05 can be reimbursed into the account registered with Medicare resulting in an effective gap of $92.95. This rebate will apply to up to 10 sessions in a calendar year.
    • At the time of your appointment, payment will be taken through a secure program (Medipass), and your rebate will be paid back into the bank account registered with Medicare/My Gov overnight (business days).
    • If you chose to use private health to claim a rebate (rather than Medicare), full payment is still required on the day and an itemised receipt will be provided for you to process the claim directly with your health fund. As each fund differs in their rebates, we are unable to advise you on your individual rebate amounts.
  • For clients accessing therapy under a NDIS plan, appointments are billed at the scheduled NDIS rate of $234.83. This is invoiced at the completion of each appointment.
  • Fees for after-hours (before 9am, or after 5pm), weekend and public holiday appointments are billed at an increased rate of $260, with the same rebates available as above (for example, with a mental health care plan, this would result in an effective gap of $122.95).

Do you bulk bill?

Unfortunately we are unable to bulk bill, however if there are financial concerns we are happy to discuss individual circumstances. Please contact us at admin@balanceandbloom.au

Is my personal information safe?

Yes your information is safe, all information that you disclose in your session with a psychologist is confidential. Please note that there are a few exceptions to this rule. The exceptions being:

  • If you are at serious risk of harm to yourself or to someone else, we are obligated to share this information in order to keep people safe.
  • With regard to certain court matters, the notes kept by your psychologist may be subpoenaed.
  • If the client is under 18 years of age and discloses that they are at risk of harm to themselves, at risk of harm by others or have been harmed by others our psychologists are mandated to report this information to the relevant bodies.

Can you see my family members?

If you are a current or recent client of ours, unfortunately this creates a conflict of interest, and as such we recommend that family members and people within your close circle see a different psychologist.

How long do the appointments go for?

Appointments at Balance and Bloom are generally 50 mins.

Do you offer therapy to children?

We see young people from age 16 upwards.

Can I still see a Psychologist without a referral?

Yes, you can. You are welcome to book an appointment with us without a referral from your GP. If you do decide to book an appointment without a referral then you will need to pay the full amount for your sessions without any rebate from Medicare.

How do I obtain a Mental Health Care Plan?

You will need to visit your General Practitioner (GP) and explain your mental health concerns. Your GP will determine your eligibility and if appropriate will arrange a Mental Health Care Plan for you.

This will entitle you to rebates under Medicare for your psychology sessions, and currently rebates are available for up to 10 sessions per calendar year.

Your GP may send the Mental Health Care Plan directly to us and we will then contact you to arrange an appointment time or alternatively you can send it to us at admin@balanceandbloom.au

Please note most GP’s will request you book a double appointment with them if you are arranging a new Mental Health Care Plan.

Do you take on Work Cover clients?

Unfortunately, we do not currently see people under work cover.

Do you offer couple or family therapy?

At this stage our therapy is available for individual clients only.

What should I expect from my first appointment?

In your first appointment, your psychologist will ask you many questions to gather a vast amount of information across your lifespan. This may take up to 2 appointments if your history is complex.  At the end of this assessment process your psychologist will be able to present you with their understanding of what treatment is required and establish mutual and achievable therapy goals.

Although your history may have already been discussed with your GP, or a previous psychologist, it is important that our psychologist gather this history from you in a personal and direct way so that they best understand your situation and can provide tailored treatment.
